A little early for Christmas….

October 3, 2009

the-star-of-bethlehem-dvd I just finished watching The Star of Bethlehem. Rick Larsen, a lawyer and Evangelical Christian, found himself fascinated by the Biblical concept of the Bethlehem star and set out on a long quest to determine its authenticity.  Thanks to modern astronomy software that allows us to look back into the night sky, Larsen was able to piece together a convincing story.  You can watch the trailer here.

I’ll add as a warning that the presentation, produced by Steven McEveety (The Passion of the Christ), is somewhat sensational and melodramatic.  The case Larsen presents is compelling in and of itself and doesn’t need the promise of “hair raising,” “spine tingling” and “jaw dropping” reactions.  My overactive imagination had pictured an entire Ringling Bros. Circus in the sky by the time he got to the actual meat of the presentation.  Then, when I found out that there weren’t spiraling comets and bursting supernovas, I was a little disappointed.

I’ve watched the DVD twice now and found that I actually liked it better the second time because I was able to actually absorb the information instead of expecting meteor showers to pop out of the screen at any second.

For what its worth, some smart people have found it credible.  What do you think of the idea of the Star of Bethlehem being a legitimate astronomical event?
